This Mannerist masterpiece was inspired by the Toledan legend that upon the death of the Count of Orgaz, a noble benefactor to the church, Saints Augustine and Stephen descended from Heaven to lay the count to rest. Directly above, an angel lifts a ghostly baby (his soul) up to a birth canal-like cloud ending at the feet of Christ.
