:

As with his portrait of Commodore Keppel, Reynolds elevates his sitter - Lord Heathfield, Governor of Gibraltar. This time he uses symbolism, a favourite device of the old masters. Here the symbol is the key to the fortress chained to the governor's wrist; it proclaims that he will defend his command against all enemies.
