1889: Courtauld Institute Galleries, London

In December 1888, Gaugin was working with van Gogh in Arles and they had been bitterly arguing. Their fighting climaxed one night as van Gogh, in an act of madness, threatened Gaugin with a razor. Remorseful after his violent outburst, van Gogh cut off part of his own ear that same night and gave it to a prostitute.
