Women of Algiers, depicting concubines in a harem, was a subject of considerable sexual titillation for the 19th century. Notable for its light and large areas of interrelated colour as well as for its alien subject, the picture was to have great influence on the Impressionists, who found, especially in its palette and its depiction of textures, a source of inspiration.
