Pygmalian and Galatea

In the ancient Greek myth retold by Ovid, Pygmalian carved a statue that came to life. For Gérôme it became an opportunity to portray a lightly erotic subject in a historic setting, the kind of scene particularly popular with Salon-goers in the late nineteenth century.
