The Nativity

1420: Musée des Beaux-Arts, Dijon

This nativity includes not only the adoration of the shepherds, but also the legend of the midwives. According to an apocryphal Gospel, Joseph summoned the midwives (one of whom has a paralysed right hand) in a moment of anxiety. One of the phylacteries bears the words "Tangue puerum et sanabaris" (touch the child and you will be healed)
