The Ship of Fools

1500: Musée du Louvre, Paris

The painting aims to serve as an expose of the excesses of the clergy - it is a satirical representation of a group of a monk and two nuns depicted as carousing and otherwise giving themselves over to lust. The peasants seen in their company have obviously been suborned by the religious, who should know better, to participate in their transgressions.
