Ricercari

Derived from motet - the early ricercari are in a free, improvisatory form with occasional use of imitation. Later ricercari are more motet-like, e.g., more extensive use of imitation. After 1540 the form adapts almost completely to motet style: a series of themes developed imitatively with overlapping cadences
