Les Nabis
A group of French artists, who called themselves Les Nabis (from the Hebrew meaning "prophet"), was working at the same time as the Symbolists in France (roughly 1889 - 1899). They were influenced by Symbolist writings and were (fashionably) anti-naturalistic and anti-Impressionistic; with them them the subject matter was all important, although they, too, painted in flat, pure colours. The prime movers in the group were Pierre Bonnard, his close friend Edouard Vuillard, and the sculptor Aristide Maillol.
