The Three Paintings of the Battle of San Romano



The constant warfare between ruling nobles led to commissions for large, commemorative battle scenes. Uccello, like most Renaissance artists, chose a symbolic interpretation: the relatively minor skirmish of San Romano resembles the stately procession of a contemporary tournament.
