| Paolo di Dono (Uccello) The Three Paintings of the Battle of San Romano
The constant warfare between ruling nobles led to commissions for large, commemorative battle scenes. Uccello, like most Renaissance artists, chose a symbolic interpretation: the relatively minor skirmish of San Romano resembles the stately procession of a contemporary tournament.
