Within Lucien Freud's work, considered a part of the revival of the figural tradition in the midst of abstraction, it is too easy to under-rate abstract qualities within the handling of the figure. He uses abstraction not to unify but to construct a figure; living flesh lovingly rendered or erotically posed is simultaneously dead on arrival. |
