The Surrender of Breda

1635: Museo del Prado, Madrid

Painted to commemorate the Spanish victory over the Dutch in 1625, this scene portrays an event Velázquez never witnessed. He relied on various prints and written descriptions of the event to create a scene so vivid it appears as though the artist were present at the surrender.
