Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife

Jan van Eyck's compositions sometimes have a rigid, static quality because of the precision of his textural surfaces. Concrete detail, however, was admired in a picture that served to document Arnolfini's wedding, just as a modern-day marriage license would.

Inscribed in Latin, on the back wall, are the words:
