Tempest

1505: Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice

The woman seems to be at the mercy of the wild environment, crouching under a lowering sky in the weed-choked ruins. The scene seems so utterly believable that generations of critics have tried to find the literary subject that was Girogione's inspiration.
