La Simplicité

:

This painting, and its sister, Young Shepherd Holding a Flower, were commissioned by Madame de Pompadour, in 1755 for her Versailles apartment. In this painting we see a girl pulling off the petals of a daisy in the traditional game of learning whether her love is returned. This is one of Greuze's more appealing paintings because the realism, though wistful, is not overwhelmed by sentiment.
