M. Bertin

1832: Musée du Louvre at Paris

Unlike the quick poses sufficient for drawings, sittings for painted portraits were often arduous experiences, as Ingres worked through the numerous transformations necessary to refine reality into his particular vision. M. Bertin is considered to be one of the finest examples of portraiture of the 19th century.
