The Blessed Damozel

:

In 1871, Rossetti was commissioned to paint this illustration of his poem "The Blessed Damozel", about lovers separated by death, waiting to be reunited. Many believe that his idealistic view of love was taken from Dante's work. By 1879 Rossetti added a predella showing the earthbound lover gazing up at the heavens.
