La Pia de'Tolomei appears in the fifth canto of Dante's Purgatory, where he encounters those who died without absolution:
"Remember me who am La Pia;
me
Siena, me Maremma, made,
unmade,
This in his inmost heart well
knoweth he
With whose fair jewel I was
Ringed and wed."
