The statue, with her back to the singer, is an allusion to the ardour and also the hopelessness of the serenade. The strenuous attitude of the singer's head, however, denotes a certain irony which underlines Watteau's loyalty to the values of the pantomime rather than his sympathy with the undertaking. |
