Italian Comedians

1720: The National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.

Painted in London in 1720 for Dr Mead. An intensely theatrical picture, in which many of the characters familiar from Watteau's earlier works seem to have found their true identity and in so doing have shed a dimension of mystery.
