This picture was painted in the first instance as a landscape study, and as such is one of Watteau's finest; the figures were added later. This is an excellent example of Watteau's fêtes galante, the place of the figures is marvellously sensitive; they sustain and intensify the mood of the landscape more brilliantly than any other painting in this genre. |
