Between Clock and Bed

c.1940:

There is a suggestion of Bonnard in this late self-portrait, done when he was seventy-seven. It depicts the artist poised between time (represented by a faceless clock) and his last resting place, his bed. In the background are stacked his hope for survival - his canvases.
