Despair

1894: Munch Museum, Oslo

Once a motif or an image entered into Munch's consciousness he would often repeat and refine it in subsequent paintings and, later on in his career, in prints as well. Despair is a variation on the theme of The Scream, having the same blood-red sunset and sea inlet with boats.
