The Hay Wain

Buy now from allposters.com1821: The National Gallery, London

Constable's view of the empty hay wagon crossing the River Stour took him five months to paint. Though it was not popular in England, it was bought by a French dealer and exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1824 where it aroused excitement, causing one French critic to comment, "Look at these English pictures - the very dew is on the ground."
