Constable's view of the empty hay wagon crossing the River Stour took him five months to paint. Though it was not popular in England, it was bought by a French dealer and exhibited in the Paris Salon of 1824 where it aroused excitement, causing one French critic to comment, "Look at these English pictures - the very dew is on the ground." |
