The Mocking of Christ

1503: Alte Pinakothek, Munich

Grünewald's brilliant colours rivaled the iridescent palette of the Venetians. Here a bloodied Christ, in a placid blue robe, withstands the violence of his tormentors. The bright red leggings of one abuser and the upraised fist of another brute balance the composition and draw the viewer's eye to the bound Messiah.
