Rape of Europa

1562: Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston

Completed in 1562, this masterpiece was intended for Philip II. Against a sea of greenish-blue, and a sky darkly coloured with red and purplish gleams, the half-naked figure of Europa seems dissolved by the painter's open brushwork.
