Jupiter and Io

1532: Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Correggio painted Io in religious ecstasy at the embrace of Jupiter (in the guise of a dark cloud). Such an erotic rendering was extraordinarily daring, but Correggio's fearless portrayal of the myth stood unchallenged.
