The Martyrdom of St Matthew

1600: Contarelli Chapel, San Luigi dei Francesi, Rome

One of three scenes the artist painted from the life of Saint Matthew. Caravaggio depicted holy figures as common men, and was accused of imitating nature at the expense of ideal beauty. After the completion of the series, he devoted himself almosst entirely to religious compositions and portraiture.
