Portrait of Julius II

1512: Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Raphael's official portrait of Julius II was completed the year before the pontif's death. Raphael had intimate knowledge of Julius's features, having painted them frequently: Saint Sixtus, in the Sistine Madonna, assumes the profile of Julius, as does the face of Pope Gregory in the Disputa and St Peter in The Liberation of Saint Peter from Prison, Julius is also pictured in the Expulsion of Heliodorus from the Temple on a litter, and in the Miracle of the Mass at Bolsena.
