The Coronation of the Virgin

1440: Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

This remarkable painting completely humanises the sacred event depicted. The pageantlike assembly is casually if reverently arrayed, and each participant is a characterisation of the earthly practical citizens of Florence. Though glorious and awesome, this image is wholly of this world. The human characters re-enact an event that took place in heaven, but they cannot transcend their fundamentally earthly realm.
