The Annunciation
 | 1441: Convento di San Marco, Florence
Here, Renaissance skill and subtlety are combined with a pre-Renaissance feel for spiritual things. All extraneous detail has been eliminated (even the decorative details of the column are covered by the angel's wings) in this composition. All is stillness and mystery and gentleness. We need no elaborative details - the clear lines, subdued colouring and the look between the angel and Mary say it all. |
