Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

1907: Giraudon, Paris

The influence of African sculpture is most clearly seen in the complex mask replacing the facial features in this celebrated painting. But the lessons of Cézanne's series of bathers is also apparent in the overall composition and in stylistic experiments such as the bending of the shoulder into space through the juxtaposition of planes of colour.
