Ognissanti Madonna

Madonna in Maestą

1310: Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence

Painted for the Church of All Saints, or Ognissanti, the added steps of the throne, receding canopy, and open side wings create a three-dimensional effect. Giotto's light and dark play with the folds in the Madonna's robe to establish a palatable form.
