The Classical Tradition in England
(1800 - 1899)
With the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum a large antiquarian spirit grew. The excavations of Johann J Winckelmann, whose excavations at those famous sites helped found the modern discipline of archaeology, was alive in the same era as Gibbon, who wrote the long, exhaustive, and brilliant Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. To these artists and scholars, antiquity held clues to artistic, technical, historical, and political ideas that were worth examining and reinterpreting once more. Thus was born a classical revival that eventually affected everything from fashion to furniture styles.
