- Glossary definition: Bambocciata
(Italian, from bamboccio, meaning 'joke'; French is 'Bambochade')

The word bambocciata is Italian and is refers to lower class subjects in a work of art, such as peasants. The subjects are usually small when painted and many Dutch and Flemish painters who lived in Italy during the seventeenth century were fond of painting in this way. Although these subjects were fairly popular, artists who belonged to some schools objected to them.
