Conversation Piece

The conversation piece painting was started in the Netherlands by such artists as Coques and later became popular with English painters such as Hogarth, Devis and Zoffany. In a conversation piece painting, there are two or more people, often set in domestic situations, whom the portraitist portrays as doing something with each other. This is different from the traditional portrait where the model is posed for the benefit of the viewer.
