The next step up from an apprentice toward becoming a master. An artist had to serve first as an apprentice, then as a journeyman and finally achieved the status of Master within a guild. Artists who were already Masters would hire other artists as journeymen to work in their shops. Sometimes it would become hard to know that shop did certain art as a result of journeymen changing from one shop to another. After finishing as journeymen, artists would sometimes set up their own shops, while others never went beyond working for other artists.
