Predella

On a large altarpiece the lower edge small strip paintings are called "predelle". They were usually only ten to twelve inches high, but they were often quite wide. An artist who was experimenting with the paintings he might use on the rest of the larger pieces of the polyptych would use the "predelle" so that mistakes would not be made on the larger work.
