Rome Prize
(aka Prix de Rome )

The Rome Prize is the English phrase for "Prix de Rome". In 1866, the French Academy (Académie des Beaux-Arts) started to operate in Rome. Artists were chosen to go from the Academy in France to the one in Rome by winning yearly competitions held in France. Young sculptors and painters often stayed at the Academy for anywhere from six to eighteen years prior to returning home.
