Salon des Refuses

Because of a scandal (the inordinate number of works refused admission) caused by the Salon during the time of Napoleon III, he ordered that a new exhibition, called "Salon des Refuses" be held for the artists who had been turned down at the Salon. Among the artists who exhibited at the exhibition were Manet, Boudin, Fantin-Latour, Jongkind, Pissarro, Whistler and Cezanne. Courbet was barred from both exhibitions.
