- Glossary definition: Slavic People
Slavic People

The Slavic peoples are defined by their linguistic attainment of the Slavic languages. They are historically attested to have inhabited Central Europe, Eastern Europe and the Balkans from the early 6th century, and many have later settled in Northern Asia. The origin of the word Slav remains controversial. Excluding the ambiguous mention by Ptolemy of tribes Stavanoi and Soubenoi, the earliest references of "Slavs" under this name are from the 6th century.
