HumanitiesWeb.org - Glossary definition: Pastoral
Pastoral
(aka eclogue, bucolic, or an idyll)

A poem that describes the simple life of country folk, usually shepherds who live a timeless, painless (and sheepless) life in a world that is full of beauty, music, and love. Shakespeare's As You Like It includes pastoral elements. Other terms often used as synonyms for pastoral are idyll, eclogue, and bucolic poetry. The georgic often shares many characteristics with pastoral, but it's worth keeping them separate.
