| Barbizon School About 1848, one of the earliest groups of French artists to work outside the Academy was forming. Theodore Rousseau and Jean-Francois Millet, among others, abandoned the upheavals of revolutionary Paris for the serenity of the Forest of Fontainebleau near the village of Barbizon.
