1833 Born 12 November, in St. Petersburg; illegitimate son of a prince - his mother later marries a retired army doctor
1843 Writes his first piece of music, a polka
1850 Enters the St. Petersburg Academy of Medicine
1856 Meets Modest Mussorgsky
1858 Receives his doctorate in chemistry
1862 Appointed professor of chemistry at Academy of Medicine. Meets mentor Mily Balakirev
1863 Marries pianist Ekaterina Protopopova
1869 Begins work on his opera Prince Igor
1872 Helps to found a school of medicine for women
1885 Overwork, anxiety over his wife's constant ill-health, and an attack of cholera undermine his well-being
1887 Dies 27 February, from a heart attack
