1841 Born 18 January, in Ambert, France, the son of a lawyer
1847 Starts piano lessons
1858 Enters law school
1861 Takes a post in the French Ministry of the Interior, but continues to study music and to compose
1865 Meets the impressionist Edouard Manet, who later paints his portrait
1869 Both his parents die within days of each other
1873 Marries Marie Dejean, who later bears him two sons. Composers Fauré, Saint-Saëns and Duparc meet regularly in his home
1880 Leaves Ministry post to concentrate on composing
1883 After visiting Spain, composes his most popular piece, the Rhapsody España
1886 Successful Brussels premiere of his opera Gwendoline
1894 Dies 13 September, in Paris, from general paralysis, at age 53
