1870 Born 30 April, in Komáron, Hungary, the son of a military bandmaster
1882 Studies the violin at the Prague Conservatory
1889 Joins Austrian army and becomes the youngest ever military bandmaster
1896 Writes first opera, Kukuska
1902 Leaves army and becomes conductor at the Theatre an der Vien, Vienna, where he directs successful premiere of his first operetta, Wiener Frauen
1905 Sensational success of his operetta, The Merry Widow
1924 Marries Sophie Meth
1925 Begins to write for Austrian tenor Richard Tauber
1929 Tauber stars in Lehár's The Land of Smiles
1934 Premiere of opera Giuditta, his last major work
1939 Remains in Austria during World War II
1948 Dies 24 October, at his villa in Bad Ischl, Austria
