1899 Born 7 January in Paris into a wealthy family
1903 Begins piano lessons with his mother, at the age of 5
1914 Studies with Ricardo Viñes, Spanish pianist and friend of Debussy and Ravel
1917 His Rapsodie nègre brings him early notoriety
1920 Becomes one of the circle of young composers known as Les Six, together with Darius Milhaud and Arthur Honegger
1924 The ballet Les Biches established Poulenc's fame
1935 Begins close association with the baritone Pierre Bernac, who becomes the finest interpreter of his many songs, or mélodies
1940 France falls to Germany; Poulenc remains in France through the occupation
1948 Poulenc and Bernac make the first of several concert tours abroad
1963 Dies in Paris, 30 January
