1879 Born in Bologna, Italy, 9 July; the son of a teacher at the local Liceo Musicale
1891 Enters his father's Liceo, studying the violin and composition
1900 Visits Russia, plays in the St. Petersburg Opera orchestra, and is taught orchestration by Rimsky-Korsakov
1908 Studies under composer Max Bruch, in Berlin
1913 Appointed professor of composition at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome
1917 His symphonic poem The Fountains of Rome is admired by Toscanini and makes him famous
1919 Marries a pupil, the singer Elsa Oliveri-Sangiacomo
1925 Embarks on the first of several successful concert tours of the U.S.
1932 Nominated to the Italian Royal Academy
1936 Dies in Rome 18 April
