1865 Born 8 December, in Hämeenlinna, Finland; the son of an army doctor
1874 Starts violin lessons
1875 Writes first piece Water Drops, for violin and cello
1885 Enters University of Helsinki as law student; moves to Academy of Music to study violin and composition
1889 Continues studies in Berlin
1892 Marries Aino Järnefelt; they have five daughters
1897 A state pension allows him to do less teaching and give more time to composition
1899 Becomes a national hero after writing Finlandia
1904 Builds family home, near Helsinki
1918 Finnish independence from Russia is followed by civil war in Finland
1926 Composes Tapiola, his last major work
1957 Dies 20 September, in Järvenpää, aged 91
