(1824 - 1884)

1824 Born 2 March in Litomysl, Bohemia; son of a brewer
1830 A child prodigy, plays piano before Austrian Emperor
1843 Moves to Prague to study with pianist Josef Proksch
1848 Takes part in failed uprising against Austrian rule. Founds his own music school in Prague
1849 Marries pianist Katerina Kolárová; they have four daughters, of whom only Zofie survives childhood
1856 Moves to Sweden
1860 Weds Bettina Ferdinandová
1861 Returns to Prague
1863 Finishes his first opera, The Brandenburgers in Bohemia, which is later well received
1866 Premiere of his masterpiece The Bartered Bride; becomes conductor at Provisional Theatre
1874 Begins to lose his hearing
1884 Dies 12 May in a mental asylum in Prague
